The festival of Navratri marks the most prosperous days of the lunar calendar according to Hinduism.
With full enthusiasm and festivity, the festival is celebrated by the Hindu community all over the world, but majorly in North India. These nine sacred days are wholly devoted to Maa Durga (Goddess Durga) and her nine avatars.
Each day is dedicated to a different avatar of the goddess and has an important color attached to it, which devotees are expected to wear while taking part in the festivities.
Navratri is celebrated twice a year, that is, in April and in October.
This year Navratri is falling on the 29th of September 2019 and will come to an end on the 7th of October 2019.
Significance Of Navratri And Navratri Vrat (Fasting)
Though some devotees of Durga keep a fast for only two days, most of the devotees keep a fast for all nine days. It is believed that for these nine days, the Goddess descends on the earth to be among her devotees.
Many devotees refrain from eating non-vegetarian food and alcohol during Navratri. Some of them also keep characteristic Navratri vrat where they eat light, vegetarian Satvik food. Nirjala vrat is where you don’t consume even a drop of water for whole day. Pregnant women, old people and children are not advised to be on such strict fasting diet.
During the fast, one is meant to refrain from everyday grains like wheat, but can consume fruits, milk, tea, coffee, potatoes and one meal of sago food preparations. For cooking, regular table salt is replaced with sendha salt.
