How Homegrown Developers are Aiding the Growth of Gaming in India and Sweden

Following the rise of digitalization, India and Sweden have established themselves as central players in the global gaming industry. However, despite their differences regarding genre and platform preference, locality is at the heart of both of their respective successes. Today, let’s take a look at how homegrown developers have aided this impressive growth in gaming in India and Sweden.

Locality is Pivotal to Swedish Gaming

According to a report by Statista, the Northern European country’s video game sector is projected to reach a market worth of $338 million in 2020. Following that, Sweden is expected to enjoy a compound annual growth rate of 4.2 percent over the next four-year period.

While there are many reasons behind Sweden’s emergence within the world of gaming, the Nordic country has risen to new, unprecedented heights as a result of the successes of local game-related organizations. As per a report from GamesIndustry, video game firms in Sweden generated combined revenues of approximately $2.1 billion in 2019.

Throughout the modern era of gaming, the Northern European country has established itself as being the home to some of the industry’s most well-known developers. For example, MachineGames, which was founded in Uppsala, are the creators of Wolfenstein, a first-person shooter that first came to fruition back in 1981 on a range of consoles, including the Apple II and Atari 8-bit, and remains a cult classic today.

Moreover, Mojang, another developer that was founded in Sweden, is the developer of Minecraft, the best-selling video game of all time. In May 2019, the sandbox title had sold over 176 million copies, a total that many believe surpasses the previous record set by Tetris. Crucially, it’s apparent that the success of Sweden’s local developers is a testament to their varied approach to the gaming sector. While their leading companies typically target mainstream consoles, they do so with individually refined focuses on mixed genres.

India’s Diverse Market Productions

While Sweden has spent much of the last few decades establishing itself in video game development, India has only recently experienced significant growth within the global market. Fundamentally, the core factor that can be attributed to the South Asian country’s rapid gaming rise is the heightened popularity of smartphone gaming. This has seen India become a top-five market for mobile gaming.

Because of that, the world’s second-most populous country by area has seen an increase in the total number of local developers. Unlike their Swedish peers, many of the Indian-based creators target the mobile sector, as showcased by companies such as Rolocule. The now 10-year-old organization has enjoyed success on mobile platforms over the last decade – most noticeably in the form of their sniper-style zombie shooter, Dead Among Us, which was named as the winner of the Game of the Year Award at NASSCOM GDC 2015.

Furthermore, aside from targeting traditional genres on smartphones, Indian developers have also sought to explore the thriving mobile casino industry. Dumadu Games, for example, create a whole host of mobile titles across a wide array of different genres, including the casino sector. This diverse genre exploration highlights the contemporary popularity of the iGaming sector within the South Asian country.

Due to that fact, established casino platforms like LeoVegas have altered their approach to target the market’s ever-growing attraction within India. As a result, India-based players are now able to enjoy a wide range of digital variants of traditional casino games on their mobiles. This is evident by the roulette category at LeoVegas, which contains Classic Auto Roulette, Live Lighting Roulette, Rapid Auto Roulette, and many more titles.

India and Sweden’s Local Route to Gaming is Admirable

While most countries will have their own local developers, few will be as instrumental to their gaming industries are those in India and Sweden. Ultimately, it’s clear that locality is at the very heart of the long-term visions of both countries as they seek to further their positions within the global video game market over the coming years.
