Finally, the festival of Raksha Bandhan is around the corner, eagerly waiting to make its presence felt. It’s a pious ritual that finds its hints back in the mythological age and since then the essence of the festival has only grown.
There’s nothing new in it still I have to mention out of compliance that Raksha Bandhan the festival for sisters to ask their brothers to give them a promise that they will protect them from any sort of troubles no matter what happens.
As per the followed practice, sisters tie a thread (popularly known as Rakhi) around the wrist of their brothers, and their brothers promise to have their back in their hard times.
There’s a custom of brothers presenting their sisters with some gifts as a mark of saying thanks for tying the sacred Rakhi.
The mythology behind Raksha Bandhan.
As per the Hindu calendar, this festival is celebrated on the full moon of the Savan month. Which falls in the last week of Savan month.
The oldest instance of Raksha Bandhan can be found way back when the Yamuna tied a Rakhi to Yama, the lord of death granted her immortality. If you have any doubts about the belief behind the festival you can check for yourself that the Yamuna is still there.
No more an only Hindu festival.
Though originally Rakhi is a Hindu festival, and there’s no questioning to the fact that Hindus are celebrating it for long.
But over the decade we have seen this festival breaking the religious boundaries, and we have seen people from other religions participating in this festival with utmost joy. This for me is a great sign for the diversity of the country.
