For all the hype behind it Spider-Man: No Way Home by opening the Multiverse in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the big screen, it’s easy to forget that a few months after release we’ll be diving further into the concept with Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness. Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Stephen Strange in both films, cannot emphasize enough how wild his upcoming sequel will be.

In an appearance on WTF with Marc Maron, Benedict Cumberbatch briefly touched on it Doctor Strange 2. This sparked an interesting exchange, suggesting what kind of role the titular hero might have in what will be an ambitious new entry in the MCU:

Benedict Cumberbatch: This is the second from him alone.

Marc Maron: So this is your movie.

Benedict Cumberbatch: Yes, that’s part of the problem. Lots of things happen in it. It’s like, “Do I have a character arc in this? Does it work?” I can do great things in it. It’s very crowded. It is called The Multiverse of Madness and it’s crazy.

Some may hear Benedict Cumberbatch’s description here and might be concerned that he described the film as “very busy”, especially given that the film is currently undergoing extensive reshoots. Also, the fact that he’s wondering if he really has a character arc as Doctor Strange could potentially cause concern for some fans who fear something might be lost amid the concept’s ambition.

It will be interesting to see how director Sam Raimi and Marvel Studios bring this crazy concept to life. At the end of the day, we can at least guarantee that a consummate professional like Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch will take his A-game to Doctor Strange 2.

Directed by Sam Raimi from a script written by Jade Bartlett and Michael Waldron, Benedict Cumberbatch is joined by Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Xochitl Gomez. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on May 6, 2022.
