It is remarkable to watch a film that revolves around the pressing social issues in a country. Moreover, putting the story into a couple and a half hours of imbecilic fun alongside the massive amount of hilarity with a steadfast and psychotic plotline might amuse the audience. Well, this is what the director of the movie, Jabariya Jodi, Prashant Singh, has done.

The movie revolves around a widespread phenomenon in the country, namely ‘Pakadwa Vivaah’ aka forced marriages. Pakadwa Vivaah or forced marriage is extremely common in a couple of Indian states, UP and Bihar. During a forced marriage, the low-paid henchmen or thugs kidnap the eligible bachelors and make them marry a random girl at gunpoint.

Given that this is a serious crime if it takes place anywhere else in the country or the world, there is a silver lining to the entire scenario. Technically, the thugs help the families of the women who cannot afford to pay substantial dowry which the boy’s family demands during the marriage.

Siddharth Malhotra portrays the role Abhay Singh, who is the Bahubali of Patna. Abhay was brainwashed by his womanizing father played by Javed Jaffery who says that it is a noble thing to do for the sake of the society.

However, when Abhay’s long lost puppy love, Babli Yadav, played by Parineeti Chopra, comes back into his life, he has a change of heart. The audience would also find Siddharth smoking chillum throughout the movie and sported the authentic vagabond outfit. Siddharth Malhotra donned every single color known to human beings; nevertheless, the outfit is too much sophisticated to convince that he is a vagabond.

Review of Jabariya Jodi

The movie is the directorial debut for Prashant Singh and to be on the safe side, the director did star the actors from Hasee Toh Phasee(2014). However, the movie did not deliver the social message it should have. On the other hand, it felt like Siddharth Malhotra was trying very hard to become a local Tapori. Malhotra did his best.

Moreover, Parineeti Chopra’s performance in the movie was commendable. She convinces the audience that she is a small-town girl, and this made the story great. The performance of the lead actors was excellent. But there is this one character that stole the show, Babli’s sleepwalking father. Sanjay Mishra portrayed the role of sleepwalking father. On the other hand, Aparshakti Khurana also brought the flair of roadside Romeo, which most of the movie of this era do not showcase.

If the director had tried to keep the movie mindlessly funny, it would have been great. The film explores too many directions but doesn’t do justice to them. Another element, which is the reason why the movie became mediocre was the script that could not engage the audience for more than two hours. Nevertheless, the film did a marvelous job is comic timing and dialogue delivery that will keep the audience chuckling throughout its run time.
